Lawrence, Kan. - The University of Missouri men's golf team finished in second place at the Kansas Invitational, which wrapped up today at Alvamar Golf Club, in Lawrence, Kan. Missouri, the defending tournament champion, shot a team round of 295 in today's final round of play, and finished with a three-round team score of 892. Host Kansas won going away, with a team score of 861 over three rounds. Last fall, MU defeated the Jayhawks at the same tournament, when KU was ranked number one in the nation.
Freshman Michael Radek (Chicago, Ill.) made quite an impression in just his second collegiate outing, as he finished in a tie for second place individually. Radek fired a three-under par 69 on Tuesday, and ended with a three-round total of 215, just five strokes off medallist Gibby Martens of Texas-San Antonio (1st - 210). Radek opened with a 75 on Monday, then improved to a 71 Monday afternoon, followed by his 69 today.
Junior Mark McBride (Lebanon, Mo.) - the reigning Missouri State Amateur Champion - was MU's other top-20 finisher, as he had a 225 total which left him tied for 17th place overall. McBride shot rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday, and had a 78 in Tuesday's final round. Tiger senior Tom Vogt (St. Charles, Mo.) finished in a tie for 25th place, after a final-round of 79 left him with a 228 total. Vogt led the way in MU's last outing, when he finished eighth in Lincoln, Neb. on Sept. 11-12.
Freshman Brandon Knaub (Seven Valleys, Pa.) and sophomore Shawn Fleming (Village of Golf, Fla.) were next up in the Tiger lineup. Knaub tied for 30th place, and shot a 73 in Tuesday's final round, a five-shot improvement over a pair of 78s on Monday. Fleming shot a 75 today - his best round of the tournament - and finished tied for 43rd place with a 232 total.
Additionally, sophomore Chris Happ, who competed unattached, tied for 43rd place, after shooting rounds of 78, 79 and 75 for a 232 total.
Next up for MU is the Kansas State Invitational, to be held Oct. 2-3 in Manhattan, Kan. Just around the corner is the Purina Classic, which is one of the nation's premier fall events hosted by Missouri. Dates for that competition are set for Oct. 9-10 at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Course in St. Charles, Mo.
