Ames, IA - The University of Missouri volleyball team showed a sense of urgency Wednesday night as they made quick work of the Iowa State Cyclones, 15-8, 15-5, and 15-5. After a disappointing loss to No. 1 Nebraska last Saturday, the Tigers were anxious to get back on the court and prove that their 11-1 start was indeed not a fluke and did so in powerful fashion.
The match, which was played on the campus of Des Moines Area Community College, saw the Tigers wrap things up in just 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, the Cyclones were able to open up 3-0 leads in both the second and third games. The Tigers were forced to come from behind using great serving collecting five service aces and also hit for a solid.253 percentage.
Leading the charge for the Tigers was sophomore Lisa Morris, who used mix of dinks and powerful swings to collect 16 kills. Morris and senior Annette Luyten also picked up two service aces. Junior Kristen Johnson also had a great outing putting down 12 kills. Heather Gerber continued to add to her all-time career assist record with 39 assists, putting her career total at 4,052.
The win moves the Tigers to 11-1 on the year and 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference. MU currently sits in a tie for sixth place in the conference as of Monday's standings. The Big 12 gauntlet continues for Mizzou as they host the 8-3 Baylor Bears on Sat., Sept. 23 in the Hearnes Center at 7:00 p.m. The Bears were ranked as high as No. 24 before losing to No. 22 Kansas State last week. However, Baylor continued to receive votes in the AVCA Top-25 poll this week, missing the poll by just 16 votes.
