DENTON, TEXAS -- The University of Missouri gymnastics team will take momentum with it to Ames, Iowa for Saturday's Big 12 Conference championships.
On Sunday, the Tigers placed second in a three-way meet at Texas Woman's University by scoring a school-record total of 195.05. The old school record was 194.825 at the 1999 Cat Classic. The No. 22 Utah State Aggies won the meet with a score of 195.9 while the host Texas Woman's Pioneers took third at 193.0.
"We're extremely happy with our performance," MU Coach Rob Drass said. "Again, we didn't count a fall and it was another team effort. We just went out and took care of business. I think this score puts us right where we want to be as it relates to our opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. If we don't fall and all of our big guns hit on the same night, we could top this score next week and boost our Regional Qualifying Score some more."
Sunday's effort raised Mizzou's RQS to a school-record level of 194.015. New national and regional rankings will be released Tuesday night which will determine where MU stands in Region 3. The Tigers have been battling Illinois, Illinois State and Illinois-Chicago for the final berths in the six-team regional championship.
As usual, Missouri's seniors led the way. Alison Akers tied for first place on the balance beam with a career-best score of 9.9. Shannon Brown tied for the uneven bars title at 9.85 and was second in the all-around (38.825). Katie Cole had another excellent meet. She placed second on vault, tying her career-high of 9.825, tied for fifth on beam with another career-best tying mark of 9.8, and tied for third on floor with a career best of 9.875.
Missouri's balance beam score of 49.0 was the second best in school history, and its uneven bars score of 49.0 was the Tigers' third best.
