Tiger Wrestling Wins 10th Dual, 22-16 Over Eastern Illinois

Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri wrestling team used five wins Sunday, including a pin and a major decision, to beat Eastern Illinois, 22-16 at Hearnes Center. The Tigers, improved to 10-8 on the season, while Eastern Illinois fell to 4-2. After Sunday's win, the Tiger team became the first MU squad to post a double-figure win total in wrestling since the 1984-85 team finished 11-10.
Senior JEFF URBAN (149) won his eleventh consecutive match with a 14-4 major decision victory over EIU's Jason Lawrence. The win also added another victory to Urban's career-high season win total which now stands at 27. He lost just eight bouts. The win was also the 96th of Urban's Missouri career. Urban was ranked No. 16 in the latest Intermat top-20 individual poll at 149 pounds.
Sophomore JESSE WEST (125) continued his fine wrestling, posting a pin of Tim Nilles in 1:29, improving West's mark to 9-2 since joining the Tiger program for the second semester. The fall victory was West's third of the season.
No. 11-ranked sophomore JOHN KOPNISKY (174) added a win to his season total as well. Kopnisky won a tough match with Louis Taylor, 4-3, to up his record to 28-3. He leads the Missouri team in victories and is only two wins away from having the first 30-win season by a MU wrestler in five seasons.
Also gaining wins for MU were JESSE JORDAN (157), who beat Frank DeFilippis, 5-1 and CHAD HERTZOG (HWT), who won a forfeit victory.
Missouri will next be in action when it hits the road this Friday to face No. 2 Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. The Big 12 Conference dual is set to begin at 7 pm.
