Columbia, Mo. - University of Missouri head softball coach Jay Miller has been selected to be the chief softball clinician at the 17th Annual European Baseball and Softball Clinic, which will be held Dec. 8-10 in Noordwijkerhout, Netherlands.
"This is an honor, both for me and for the University, to be able to speak overseas," said Coach Smith. "It's always great to be able to meet coaches from around the world and share ideas with them."
Assisting with the softball instructional duties will be former Tiger Assistant Coach Lisa Navas, head coach of Barry University in Miami, Fla. The clinic is designed to bring coaches together from European nations as well as the United States in order to share ideas and coaching tips and to discuss the international future of baseball and softball. The clinicians for baseball include Bob Keyes, founder of the Baseball Academy in Utah, Jim Jones, International Sports Group member, and Larry Bowa, manager for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Miller has coached the Tigers since 1988, garnering a 649-354 record as a head coach. Miller's speciality has always been his ability to develop great pitchers, including former All-Americans Barb Wright and Karen Snelgrove. Throughout the 18 years he's been involved with a collegiate program, Miller has developed 15 All-Americans (6 pitchers), including six from Mizzou. In the past 18 years, he has also had 23 Academic All-Americans (2 pitchers) on his teams and five National Strength Coaches All-Americans (1 pitcher).
Miller's success makes him one of the most respected collegiate softball coaches in the nation. He is currently in the USA National Team Olympic coaching pool for the 1997-2000 quadrinium. In 1998, Miller was selected as the head coach of the USA Softball alternate team. This team played against the U.S. Pan Am and Olympic Teams during the Coca-Cola USA Softball American Challenge Series during the summer of 1999. The team represented the USA in the 1999 Canada Cup, finishing third. He served on the NCAA Women's Softball Committee from 1991-1997 and was a member of the USA Softball National Team Selection Committee, choosing players and coaches for the 1996 Gold Medal winning U.S. Olympic Softball Team (1993-1996). He is currently on the NCAA Rules Committee and the NFCA All-American Committee.
