Today was another show down between two great pitchers, and this time Stephanie Falk and the Missouri Tigers came out on top 3-1. The Tigers were able to capitalize on six hits and two Longhorn miscues to give Texas their first Big 12 Conference loss of the season.
The Longhorns scored first in the top of the third inning. Chelsea Stoughton got the first hit of the day, a single to center field. Tiffiny Valdehueza followed with a RBI-double to left center field and advanced to third on the throw home. Falk struck out two batters and walked one between them to finish out the half inning.
The Tigers had an answer for the Longhorns in the bottom half of the inning. Linda Swarts started the Tiger rally with a lead off home run over the center field fence, tying the game 1-1. The next two batters got out, but the Tigers were out to win. Sara Vassmer hit an infield single. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Christy Skouby reached first on an error by the Longhorn right fielder and Vassmer scored the unearned run. Stacy Gemeinhardt walked. Erin Erickson singled to second base and advanced to secondwhile the Longhorns were trying to throw Skouby out at home. Skouby was able to score on an error by the Longhorn second baseman, giving the Tigers the 3-1 lead.
The rest of the game was uneventful. The Tigers added three more hits, while the Longhorns had two more.
Falk got the win for the Tigers. She struck out eight batters and only walked one. Her record improves to 12-10. Charla Moore took the Loss for the Longhorns. She struck out four batters and walked one. Her record moves to 14-10.
The Tigers next game is Wednesday at 5 p.m. against the rival Kansas Jayhawks. The game will be televised live on College Sports Southwest. The only Missouri stations that will carry the game is MetroSports in Kansas City.
