AMES, Iowa - Missouri's Pete Sansone struckout eight batters and allowed seven hits to help the Missouri baseball team down Iowa State, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at Cap Timm Field. Missouri won the series, winning two of three games to up its record to 19-11 overall and 7-5 in the Big 12. The loss drops ISU to 8-20 overall and 2-10 in league games.
Sansone was only tested in one inning en route to his fourth win of the season. The junior gave up two runs in the fourth inning after Aaron Runk singled followed by back-to-back doubles from Jade O'Brien and Ben Van Iderstine to even the score at 3-3. However, the Tigers answered with two runs in the fifth inning on a pair of sacrifice flys from Nick Wilfong and Landon Brandes off Cyclone starter Lincoln Mincks. Both teams went scoreless the last four innings, as Cyclone reliever Dave Rossman allowed just three hits, replacing Mincks in the sixth inning. Tiger closer Ryan Stegall finished up business in the ninth, retiring all three batters for the second straight day to record the save (9). Mincks tallied the loss (0-2), giving up five runs on nine hits in five innings of work.
Wilfong did the most damage at the plate for the Tigers, going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs. Jon Williams added two hits in four at bats to help the MU cause. The Cyclones were led by freshman Joe Ferin, who smacked a single and a double in five at bats. Ryan Wickham went 1-for-4, increasing his hitting streak to 11 games, while O'Brien's double gave him two triples, a home run and a two-bagger in the three-game series.
ISU continues its homestand Tuesday April 4 against Rockhurst. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
