COLUMBIA, Mo - Some 9,182 fans Missouri fans enjoyed a beautiful day and some great football on Saturday afternoon at the annual Black and Gold Game. The Gold team outlasted the Black squad 24-21. The Gold team, made up mostly of the Tigers' second-teamers, were spotted 14 points during the game by Head Coach Larry Smith.
The Gold team started the game with a 7-0 advantage and quickly made it 10-0 thanks to special-teams play. Sophomore John McPherson blocked a Jared Gilpin punt on the Black team's four-yard line. Alexander St. Peter connected on a 21-yard field goal to give the Gold team a 10-0 lead.
The Black offense then went to work. Sophomore quarterback Kirk Farmer (17-for-35, 200 yards, led his team on a 14 play, 65-yard drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown strike to Travis Garvin (6 catches, 58 yards).
The Black team struck again early in the second quarter when tailback Zack Abron plowed his way five yards into the end zone for a 14-10 lead. Abron, who played for both squads, combined for 19 carries for 76 yards.
St. Peter capped the first half scoring with a line-drive 49-yard field goal with 34.4 seconds on the clock to give bring the Gold within a point at 14-13 going into halftime.
The second half belonged to both defenses. The Gold squad was awarded eight points to begin the second stanza, making it a 21-14 game. St. Peter connected on a 31-yard field goal to give the Gold a 24-14 advantage.
The Black team was held off the scoreboard until the 4:04 mark of the fourth quarter. Zain Gilmore carried the ball in from five yards out to bring the Black squad within three points at 24-21.
The Black defense held, giving them one more opportunity to gain the victory, but the Gold defense came up with a big play. Farmer rolled out of the pocket to the right and fired a pass that was picked off by Clarence Jones. (Eight tackles). The Gold team ran one more play before the game ended.
