Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri men's golf team will host a duel against Kansas State University this Sunday (April 16th) at Eagle Knoll Golf Course, located 15 minutes south of Columbia on Highway 63. Thirty-six holes of play will begin at 8:00 a.m., and there is no admission fee.
The duel, titled the "Cat Fight," will feature a unique scoring system that should provide an interesting day. The traditional team scoring system used in collegiate golf will be scrapped, in favor of a system that borrows from international competitions such as the Ryder Cup and Dunhill Cup.
Each team will have eight golfers match up in head-to-head stroke play competition, with each match representing one point. Each golfer will play two rounds, creating a total of 16 matches, or 16 available points. The team which claims at least 8? points will win the match.
"We're looking forward to the competition," said MU Head Coach Tim Robyn. "This gives us a chance to have an oldtime competitive setting where it's Missouri vs. Kansas State, rather than playing against the field. I feel that this format enhances the competitive situation, where our guys know they're competing directly against someone else for points. It's also a good chance for us to play in one more competitive situation before the Big 12 Championships," he said.
The Cat Fight will mark MU's final regular-season match prior to the Big 12 Championships, which are scheduled for April 24-25 in Hutchinson, Kan.
