Tiger Track Completes First Day Of NCAA Championships

After one day of competition at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., two Tigers advance and one receives his first All-American honor.

Freshman Christian Cantwell took seventh place at the meet with a hurl of 61 feet 5 inches, an inch and a half shy of his career best. The Eldon, Mo. native finished just behind Iowa State's Jamie Beyer, taking home MU's first All-American track honor in 2000.

Senior Derrick Peterson and junior made it through the preliminaries in the 800m. Both will compete in the finals, in the hopes of claiming the title. Peterson was in first place with a time of 1:48.06, a new season-best. The Jonesboro, Ga. native hopes to add national champion to his Big 12 Champion title. Wysong finished in third place through one day of competition just ahead of Texas Longhorn Liz Diaz placed just ahead of Wysong at the Big 12 Championships. The Nevada, Mo. native's time of 2:04.67 became a new career-best and a broke the Missouri school record in the indoor 800m.

Senior Ryan Pirtle finished 12th in the preliminaries for the mile with a time of 4:06.92 while sophomore Timothy Dunne took 14th in the 800m with a time of 1:51.00. Neither advances to the final round. The women's distance medley relay team placed 10th in the final round with a time of 11:27.80.
