Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri wrestling team was upset Thursday night by Central Missouri State, 21-15 at Hearnes Center. The Mules won six matches in handing MU its second consecutive loss and eighth of the season. Missouri dropped to 9-8, while CMSU improved to 9-4.
JEFF URBAN (149), KEVIN HERRON (197), JESSE WEST (125) and JOHN KOPNISKY (174) won matches for Missouri. Herron improved his winning streak to 12 straight with an 18-1 technical fall win, while Urban set a new season-high with his 26th triumph. Urban's win was also his tenth in a row. Kopnisky's victory tied him for the team lead with 27 wins and West bumped his record to 8-2.
The Mules started the upset in the first match when Zak Knight pinned No. 14 Jeremy Spates (141) of Missouri in 3:42 to give the visitors a 6-0 lead. After the Urban major decision victory, CMSU scored two decisions to up the lead to 12-4. Kopnisky defeated Matt Johnson to bring the score to 12-7, but John Rolling got three points back for CMSU with a 6-3 decision over MU's JOSH MAZE.
With the score 15-7, Herron scored a big technical fall victory of Korak Simmons to close the gap to 15-12 with only three matches remaining. At heavyweight, the Mules' Dan Spencer defeated CHAD HERTZOG putting MU behind 18-12 and in need of a pin victory. West won by decision at 125 pounds, cutting the deficit to 18-15, leaving MU in need to a victory at 133 pounds to tie the dual. MARK BADER took a 2-2 tie into the third period of his match with Luke Shaw, but could not come up with a takedown in the final minute. Shaw took a 3-2 win on an escape, wrapping up a 21-15 win for Central Missouri.
MU will have a ten-day wait for its next match, a home dual with Eastern Illinois on Sunday, February 6. The match begins at 2 p.m. and will take place in the Hearnes Center Arena.
