Homestand Continues
The Missouri track and field teams are home for the second straight week as it hosts the Tiger Invitational on Friday, January 21. The field events will begin at 4:00 p.m., with the running event starting at 6:00 p.m. The meet will feature the men's and women's teams from Indiana State, Kansas and Southwest Missouri State.
Tigers Perform Well in Season Opener
Behind eleven individual victories, including six 1-2 finishes and one relay victory, the Black and Gold tracksters proved they were ready for 2000. The event was a non-scoring event, but that did not prevent the Tigers from performing well.
Tigers Show Their Muscle
Eleven Tiger athletes that claimed individual events including a 1-2-3-4 finish in the men's shot put. Freshman Christian Cantwell, the strongest athlete in Missouri history, claimed his first collegiate victory winning the shot put with a heave of 55 feet, 9 3/4 inches. Cantwell was followed by junior Micah Shanks (53-9 3/4), freshman Russ Bell (52-6 1/2) and sophomore Scott Barlett (52-2).
On the women's side, Brooke Ennen showed great improvement from 1999. In the 20-pound weight throw, Ennen won with a throw of 51 feet, 5 and ? inches. The sophomore claimed her first collegiate victory after finishing in the runner-up position twice in the weight throw as a freshman. Freshman Malinda Utterback made her Tiger debut with a fifth place showing the weight throw (37-8 ?) while sophomore Carla Grewe turned in a sixth place performance (36-4 ?). Grewe was MU's highest performer in the shot put placing second (38-8 ?).
Middle Distance Again a MU Strength
Mizzou also swept the top three places in the men's 800m run. Leading the charge for the Black and Gold was freshman Stewart Kimball (1:54.54). Kimball came to MU ranked as the second best high school half miler in the country. Junior Blair Hansard finished second (1:56.98) while senior Jason Franken placed third (1:58.70).
Sunny Gilbert and Kerry Hils finished 1-2 in the 1,000m run outdistancing two All-Americans from Arkansas. Gilbert, a junior All-Big XII performer in the event, won in a time of 2:53.51. Hils, a freshman from Moberly, Mo., placed second with a time of 2:56.42.
Five Tigers Claim First Ever Victories
Besides Cantwell, Ennen and Kimball, two other Mizzou athletes won their first-ever collegiate titles. Kent Shelton, won the pole vault with a leap of 15 feet. The senior won the event over freshman Knut Harold Sommerfeldt. Freshman Josiah James made his collegiate debut winning the 600yd dash in 1minute, 14.60 seconds.

A Last Look At 1999
The University of Missouri track and field team put a close to the 1999 season in grand fashion on Saturday (Jan. 15) evening. The team and personnel involved with the track and field team gathered for the first annual honors dinner-dance. It was a last chance to honor all the student-athletes how had an outstanding 1999 both in the classroom as well as on the track. List below are all the categories of honors recognized as well as the honorees.
