Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri wrestling team turned in its best performance of the season Sunday, winning all three of its matches at the Brown Duals. Missouri, 6-6 on the season, defeated Brown 21-16 in the day?s final dual for the tournament championship. Brown had also won both its duals entering the meeting with the Tigers. Missouri grapplers KEVIN HERRON (17-7), JEFF URBAN (21-8), JESSE JORDAN (20-12) and JEREMY SPATES (24-5) each won three matches for Missouri. Herron continued his impressive wrestling by pinning each of his three opponents. The sophomore 197-pound wrestler has now pinned four of his last five opponents.
JESSE WEST (125), the newest Missouri Tiger, also won two matches, after gaining a forfiet versus Franklin and Marshall, the biggest of which came in the Brown dual. With Missouri behind 13-12, West pinned Ryan Gill just 49 seconds into the match to give MU an 18-12 advantage and a lead they would not give up.
Prior to the match with Brown, Missouri handed Army a 25-15 defeat. The win improved the Tigers record to 5-6 while Army fell to 0-4. Jeff Urban started the dual with a 15-3 win, his 20th of the season, marking the fourth consecutive season the Wichita, Kan. native has won 20 matches or more. MU victories also came from Jesse Jordan, Kevin Herron, Jesse West, Chad Hertzog
In the first dual, Missouri used four pins and two major decisions in route to a 47-3 win over Franklin and Marshall. Tigers Jesse Jordan, Josh Maze, Kevin Herron, and Jeremy Spates pinned their opponents, while Maze along with fellow freshman Mark Vollmar each recorded the first dual win of their Tiger careers.
Senior Jeff Urban and Vollmar earned the major decision vicotories helping MU to its fourth team win of the season, tying the number of wins the team achieved all of last season.
Missouri will next wrestle on Thursday, January 20 when they take on Missouri Valley and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at Marshall, Mo. MU?s next home match takes place on Thursday, January 27 when the Tigers host Central Missouri State at 7 p.m.
