Missouri women's swimming and diving team kicked off its season on Friday, October 15 at University Natatorium in Columbia, Mo. competing against each other. The Tigers had their annual Black and Gold meet with the Black team defeating the Gold team 132.5-92.5
MU had an outstanding day. Based on this preview, the women's team has many great swims to come during the season There were also nine meet records broken during the competition on the women's side, a record within itself. Only two records from previous years stand.
The Black team was victorious because of a total team effort as five different women won events. Those swimmers claiming individual victories were freshman Katy Chandler in the 200 freestyle, junior Jeanna Willi in the 50 freestyle, sophomore Krista Davis in the 100 butterfly, sophomore Erin Wilke on the one-meter springboard and junior Kim Black in the 100 freestyle. Three of the four swims established new Black and Gold meet records.
Both relay events were also won by the women in black. The 200 medley relay team of Erika Kalocinski, Tawney Larm, Jeanns Willi and Kim Lambert swam to victory. In the 400 freestyle relay, Chrissy Freih, Krista Davis, Tawney Larm and Sarah Stowe teamed up to win the event.
The Gold team also showcased many fine performances as five women also won events. Those individual claiming victory were sophomore Molly Vetter in the 500 freestyle, junior Kara Bramer in the 200 individual medley, senior Rikki Janes in the 100 backstroke, sophomore Tori Denlinger on the three-meter springboard and freshman Leslie Hoh in the 100 breaststroke. Four of the five victories were won in new Black and Gold meet records.
The Tigers next competition is the Big 12 meet in Ames, Iowa on Friday, October 22. The six teams from the Big 12 Conference get together to have a little fun swimming events and relays that they normally do not get a chance to compete in during the regular season. Following the Big 12 meet, Missouri heads back to Ames, Iowa to dual with the Cyclones on Friday, October 29 kicking off their regular season.
