Aug. 26, 1999
COLUMBIA, Mo.- University of Missouri Director of Athletics MICHAEL ALDEN announced the completion of the 1999-00 women's basketball schedule this afternoon. Coach CINDY STEIN has not only strengthened her team, she has also strengthened the schedule as well. No less than 12 of Missouri's 1999-00 opponents played in the postseason last year. Nine of those schools will face the Tigers in Columbia.
The Tigers will open their home schedule with Southeast Conference power Arkansas, a 1997-98 Final Four team and the 1998-99 Women's NIT champions. Missouri will once again play host to the newly named Unilever Lady Tiger Classic where its opponents will be Centenary, Western Kentucky and NCAA Tournament participant Evansville. The Tigers will also renew an intrastate rivalry with Saint Louis University. Missouri will keep up the midwest flavor with road trips to Bradley, Southern Illinois-Carbondale and Eastern Illinois.
The Big 12 Conference took nine teams to postseason play last year. Seven of those nine teams will travel to Columbia in 1999-00. Missouri opens conference play at home with the Iowa State Cyclones, a team that returns all five starters from last year's squad and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers will also host the Lady Raiders of Texas Tech, the two-time defending Big 12 champions. Kansas and Nebraska, both NCAA Tournament teams a year ago, invade Columbia as will Women's NIT participants Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Colorado.
"We are extremelly excited about the challenges of the new season," said Stein. "We have got some excellent teams coming to Columbia this season."
"If I were a fan, I wouldn't wait to buy my season tickets."
