The Tigers advanced to the second round in the Big 12 tournament today after beating Texas. By a victory of 3-1, the Tigers repeated history by pulling an upset in the first round. In 1996 Texas Tech was the first round victim.
Texas came out with a full attack and took the lead when Shannon Cuthbertson crossed a ball that curved into the net. However, Missouri wasted no time tying it up when Amy Timmerman connected with Nikki Thole to have her second goal of the season. Then in the 25th minute, freshman Sarah Sallee scored the game winner. Junior Erin Grimsley and Timmerman worked the ball through the Longhorn for the assists. Then in the second half freshman Stepanie Brennan scored the insurance goal.
"The defense is what kept us in the game tonight," said junior goalkeeper Jackie Adamec after the game. The Tigers were outshot by the Longhorns 18-9. Adamec notched six saves, which now gives her 21 saves in three games.
The Tigers face the top seed in the conference tomorrow at 5 p.m. The winner of that game faces the winner of the Texas A&M and Nebraska game in the championship match.
