Missouri Sweeps Through Oklahoma in Soccer

October 12, 1998

COLUMBIA, Mo --In a weekend of Big 12 action the Missouri Tigers swept through Oklahoma like the tornadoes of last week. On Friday Missouri blanked Oklahoma 5-1. Freshman Sarah Sallee notched her first ever goals in her home state. She scored two in a row, after junior Erin Grimsley closed out the first half achieving the same feat. Last week's Big 12 Player of the Week, Nikki Thole, finished off the scoring in the 67th minute of the game. Oklahoma scored early, but Missouri quickly switched roles and became the hunter after Grimsley scored her second and game winning goal.

"I thought Oklahoma was a tough physical team. They played hard, but we just capitalized on their mistakes," said Head Coach Bryan Blitz after the game

Next up was the Cowgirls of Oklahoma State. According to Blitz, "they were our toughest opponent so far." In their second overtime game this season, Missouri allowed two goals in the second half and allowed the Cowgirls to tie up the game. In the first half freshman Stephanie Brennan got her first goal as a Tiger, and veteran Kristin Boeker notched one for herself as well. However, their efforts were smashed when Oklahoma State managed to penetrate the Missouri defense. At the end of 90 minutes the Big 12 rivalry carried over. For the Cowgirls, this was their fourth consecutive OT game this season, and every Big 12 game they have played has gone into OT. Immediately into overtime the Cowgirls attacked. After junior goalkeeper Jackie Adamec made two clutch saves and sent the Tigers on to the attack, the team worked the ball up the field. Juniors Heather Buchheit and Kate Dwyer got the game winning play set up when they moved the ball up the field to Sarah Sallee. From there Sallee headed the ball to Grimsley's feet, wher from, Grimsley beat the challenging goalkeeper for the win in the 3rd minute of overtime.
