COLUMBIA, Mo.- Not only has Julie Helm made her mark on the court, Helm is a hit off the floor as well. Helm is a finalist for the Girls Basketball Magazine (Gball Magazine) All-Inspiration Team. The team will include 10 collegiate women's basketball players from throughout the country. The team will be announced at the Women's Final Four in San Jose, Calif.
Besides carrying a grade point average of above 3.1, Helm performs several duties throughout the community. She is an active member of the Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. She has also worked with the Special Olympics and Rainbow House. Besides those community efforts, Helm is also a student mentor at West Junior High School. She spends two hours everyother week.
The team will be chosen via fan voting on the internet. Within the next week, fans will be able to vote on the Gball Magazine website: www.gballmag.com.
Julie Helm already has one prestigious award under her belt. Helm was awarded the Nations Bank Community Champion Award in conjunction with the Big 12 Conference.
Nations Bank names three student-athletes from each Big 12 school throughout the school year and awards each institution $1,000 to their general scholarship fund on behalf of those student-athletes. At the end of the school year, Nations Bank selects one student-athlete out of the group of 36 to be named the 1998-99 Community Champion of the year.
Helm joins Mizzou football standout Corby Jones and track-and-field athlete William Hopson as the University of Missouri's Community Champions.
