Dougherty Is Impressive in First Spring Scrimmage

April 3, 1999

COLUMBIA, MO -- Sophomore quarterback Jim Dougherty put four touchdowns on the board Saturday and passed for 157 yards as Coach Larry Smith scrimmaged his Missouri football team for the first time this spring.

Dougherty completed 9-of-12 passes for 153 yards and drove the team on four long scoring drives. He ran one yard for one of those touchdowns.

The scrimmage lasted 130 plays and was designed to give each of three quarterbacks 40 plays -- 20 with both the first and second units.

"We got done what we planned for," Smith said. "We'll evaluate the tapes and I'll be able to say more about individual players on Monday. We'll probably move the depth chart around a little bit."

Second string receivers Eric Spencer, a sophomore from Houston, and Travis Garvin, a freshman from Bradenton, Fla., each had big days. Spencer caught passes from three different quarterbacks, nabbing 10 for 140 yards. Garvin, who entered school in January, caught five for 63 yards. Sophomore tailback Zain Gilmore was the leading rusher, carrying 12 times for 86 yards. Most of those came on his final carry when he shot through the middle of the line and dashed 66 yards for a touchdown.

Redshirt freshman Kirk Farmer directed one scoring drive which culminated in his own six-yard run, and completed 12-of-17 passes for 111 yards. Ten of his passes came in a row, including five to Spencer. Junior Ryan Douglass led a long drive against the number-one defense to set up a 36-yard field goal by Tim Geiger. Douglass completed 5-of-18 passes for 51 yards, and rushed 10 times for 33 yards.

The Tigers will practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week, then scrimmage again next Saturday. Spring practice will come to an end on April 17 with the annual Black-and-Gold Game which kicks off that day at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $3.00, or three cans of food to benefit the Central Missouri Food Bank's "Score Against Hunger" campaign.
