West Lafayette, Indiana - The Missouri Tiger wrestling team was defeated Sunday afternoon by Purdue University 24-9 in dual meet action. The Boilermakers were ranked #16 in the most recent Intermat Magazine Top 25 poll. Missouri was able to win three individual matches, but lost a couple of close matches to the Big Ten powerhouse that led to the overall loss.
Freshman John Kopnisky (165) won his tenth match of the year, and is the only Tiger to win a match in each of Missouri's three dual matches thus far. Junior Jeff Urban (149) followed his win yesterday at Indiana with a 5-3 victory at Purdue, his eighth win of 1998-99. At 197, Kevin Stroh was victorious for MU, 4-2. The loss knocked Missouri to 0-3 in dual meets, while Purdue won their first dual match of the season.
As was the case at Indiana on Saturday, Missouri was unable to pull wins out of a couple of close matches at Purdue on Sunday. Also their inexperience in Division I competition, cost them points in matches that were lost by wide margains. This trip to Indiana marked the end of the 1998 schedule as the Tigers will not wrestle competitively again until January 9 when they travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to particiapte in the Great Plains Open.
