Black Comes Back From Seven Down to Defeat Gold

October 5, 1998

COLUMBIA, Mo.-- Freshman shortstop Ryan Stegall was the hero Saturday with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Missouri Black squad a 10-9 win over the Gold team in the annual Missouri Baseball Black and Gold Game at Simmons Field. All-Big 12 closer Chris George pitched a perfect top of the ninth inning to hold the game at 9-9 before the Black team won the game in the final frame.

The Gold team got out to a 7-0 lead after four innings which included a four-run fourth inning. J.R. Warner delivered a two-run double and Ryan Pickett doubled in Warner in the inning.

The bottom of the Black order got htings rolling in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Gold pitcher Jody Harris. Two Gold errors led to two runs and Jon Williams (3-for-5) tripled in another run before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Stegall.

Trailing 8-4 in the seventh inning, the Black team got things going again. Redshirt freshman Paul Couleur (2-for-4) singled and scored on a two-run home run by freshman walk-on Joe Rooney, a Columbia Hickman product.

The Black team took advantage of two more Gold errors in the eighth inning a tallied three more runs to tie the game 9-9. In the ninth inning, senior Mike Ketelsen (2-for-4) doubled off of Ralph McCasland and then Stegall singled him home for the comeback victory.

Sophomore Nick Wilfong collected four hits for the Gold team and freshman Wes Fewell of Columbia Hickman had an impressive debut with three hits.
