| Coach Gwinn Henry catapulted the football Tigers into the big time during a nine-year career between 1923 and 1931, when Missouri posted a record of 40-28-9, and won three Missouri Valley Conference championships. From 1924 to 27, Henry coached the Tigers to a 25-6-3 mark, and MUs league titles won in 24 and 25 prompted the University to build Memorial Stadium still the football home of the Tigers. Henry later coached five years at the University of New Mexico, where he won a Border Conference title in 1936, and four years at the University of Kansas. He also coached an independent professional team the St. Louis Gunners for one season. As an athlete, Henry was the national AAU champion in the 100- and 220-yard dashes in 1909 and 1910. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1969. |
