OUTLOOK: Set to compete at 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Daniel Hewitt is one of four Tiger wrestlers that will vie for time in Missouri's 10-man lineup. Hewitt is expected to wrestle at several tournaments this season to enhance his mat skills and help him develop further in the collegiate style of wrestling.
"Dan is a hard-working wrestler and solid on his feet," Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith said. "He made big improvements last year and our coaching staff expects him to further his wrestling talent this season."
2007-08: Hewitt wrestled in the 149-pound weight class in his first season at Missouri. His first victory came Nov. 11, with a 6-4 decision over T.J. Warner of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville while at the Central Missouri Open. Competing at the Missouri Valley College Open on Feb. 2, Hewitt recorded a 6-3 win by decision over Andy Schoultz of Cumberland College. Hewitt competed in four tournaments in his redshirt season.
HIGH SCHOOL: Coached by former All-American Craig Martin at St. Charles West, Hewitt finished as high as third in the 152 pound weight class at the Missouri State Championships his senior season (2007). As a junior, Hewitt wrestled at 140 pounds and took fourth place at the Missouri State Championships qualifying for the annual competition as a sophomore in 2005. Hewitt's Warrior team finished third in the state in 2006. For his work on the mat, Hewitt earned all-conference honors on three occasions (2005, 2006, 2007) and was name to the all-state team as both a junior (2006) and senior (2007). In addition to competing with the Warrior wresting team, Hewitt was also a member of the football program.
PERSONAL: Daniel was born Sept. 2, 1988, to Brian and Kim Hewitt in St Charles, Mo. Hewitt has two brothers, Matthew (25) and Nathan (21). Hewitt plans to major in physical therapy at Mizzou.
