Michael Fly

With 16 years of experience in both collegiate and professional basketball, Michael Fly is in his first season with the Mizzou men’s basketball program as the team’s Director of Scouting and Analytics.

Prior to joining the Tigers, Fly served as head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University from 2018 to 2022. During his tenure, he led the Eagles to the third-most wins in a single season in the program’s history with 22 victories during the 2021-22 campaign. FGCU also set school records for non-conference wins, 3-pointers made, 3-pointers attempted, blocks per game and total blocks in a season.

Overall, Fly recruited and developed two Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Year award winners in addition to the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year during the 2021-22 season. He also led the Eagles to historic wins over the University of Miami, Rhode Island and Liberty on their rarely-conquered home floor. His highly-touted 2021 recruiting class was heralded as one of the top-10 mid major recruiting classes in the country and allowed Fly to enjoy one of the biggest turnarounds in college basketball during the 2021-22 campaign – vaulting the COVID-stricken Eagles from 10 wins during the shortened 2020-21 campaign to 22 victories and a postseason berth one year later.

"I am extremely excited to join Coach Gates' staff in Columbia," Fly said. "I watched him rebuild Cleveland State's program in a short time and I am confident we will get the job done here at Mizzou. I have had a longstanding relationship with Coach Gates and multiple members of his staff. I look forward to growing our program alongside a group of wonderful coaches and human beings."

Prior to his head coaching stint at FGCU, Fly was an assistant coach for the Eagles. During his tenure from 2011 to 2018 as an assistant, he was part of six Atlantic Sun championship teams and three NCAA Tournament teams, including the 2013 squad who reached the Sweet 16.

Fly also served as the video coordinator on Leonard Hamilton's staff at Florida State from 2008 to 2011. While in Tallahassee, Fly helped the Seminoles reach three NCAA Tournaments and a Sweet 16.

Before his time at Florida State, Fly worked alongside current Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff as a video coordinator for the Charlotte Bobcats during the 2006-07 season.

Fly graduated from the University of Kentucky and began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Georgetown College during the 2004-05 season.

Fly and his wife, Heather, have two sons, Jack (3) and Crew (newborn).
