| The legendary Pitchin Paul Christman came to Mizzou from Maplewood, Missouri, and lettered in football in 1938-39-40 and in baseball in 1938-39-41. He was a three-time all-Big Six Conference quarterback, and twice won all-America honors. Christman finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1939, and fifth in 1940. He went on to play in the National Football League with the Chicago Cardinals (1945-49) and Green Bay Packers (1950) and led the Cardinals to division titles in 1947-48 and the league championship in 1947. In 1990, he still stood fourth in MU history with 2,989 passing yards, and third with 3,882 yards of total offense. In 1940, he led the nation with 1,131 yards passing and 13 TD passes. During his career, MU had a 20-8 record with a Big Six title in 39 and its first bonafide bowl game the 1940 Orange Bowl. His jersey number 44 is retired. He was the first to excel as a television analyst, working with Curt Gowdy and others on NBC. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1960. |
