Jacob Yoro joined the Tigers football program in February 2024, and serves as an assistant coach, working primarily with safeties. He spent his first season as a senior defensive analyst before being elevated to his current role in 2025.
Yoro boasts over two decades of coaching experience on the FBS, FCS, Division III, NAIA and high school levels.
In his first season in Columbia, Yoro assisted defensive coordinator Corey Batoon in taking Mizzou from 47th and 47th nationally the two previous seasons in passing yards allowed to 18th in the country. Additionally in 2024, the Tigers improved in third down conversion percentage defense (33rd and 47th to 5th) and scoring defense (55th and 25th to 20th).
Under Yoro’s guidance, safeties Marvin Burks Jr. and Daylan Carnell finished third and fourth on the team in tackles with 66 and 51 stops, respectively. Carnell led the team in pass breakups (seven), while finishing second in caused fumbles (two) and fifth in tackles for loss (5.0). Burks Jr. posted 10 games with three-plus tackles and three contests with 10 stops, including a season-high 12 against Vanderbilt.
Yoro came to Mizzou after a seven-year stint at his alma mater Hawai'i, serving most recently as the Rainbow Warriors defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2023. He also spent time on staff as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach (2022), the linebackers coach (2021), the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach (2020), the outside linebackers and nickelbacks coach (2018-19) and safeties coach (2017).
During his time in Honolulu, Yoro helped Hawai'i to a program-record four consecutive bowl appearances (2018, 2019 & 2021 Hawai'i and 2020 New Mexico) and a 2019 Mountain West Championship game showing. Under his guidance, the Rainbow Warriors defense led the Mountain West with 17 takeaways in 2020 and tied the school record with five defensive touchdowns in 2021.
Yoro mentored two-time All-Mountain West edge rusher Kaimana Padello (2018 & 2019) and two-time First Team All-Mountain West linebacker and Polynesian Hall of Fame Player of the Year finalist Darius Muasau (2020 & 2021). Padello tallied 61 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks over the 2018-19 seasons, while Muasau recorded 213 tackles, 24.0 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks across the next two years. Muasau was later selected in the sixth round (183rd overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.
Prior to his time at Hawai'i, Yoro served two seasons (2015-16) as the defensive backs coach at Cal Poly, where he helped guide the Mustangs to a spot in the 2016 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.
Yoro also spent time at Pacific University in Oregon as its assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach (2014). He also served four years (2010-13) as the Boxers’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. In 2013, his defense ranked fifth among NCAA Division III teams in sacks (35.0) and 28th in tackles for loss (75.0) and limited opponents to just 19.6 points per game.
Yoro got his start at the collegiate level at Montana Western in 2009, serving as the linebackers coach, after spending one season (2008) as the linebackers coach at Waipahu High School in Waipahu, Hawai'i.
Early in his coaching career from 2003-07, Yoro led his alma mater Saint Louis School in Honolulu to multiple league titles and three high school state championship appearances as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He earned his coaching start at Mililani High School in Mililani, Hawai'i as the Trojan’s linebackers coach.
Yoro lettered two years (1998-99) as a linebacker at Montana before an injury ended his career. During his time with the Grizzlies, he helped them advance to consecutive FCS playoffs. As a senior, he compiled 20 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, and two pass breakups.
A native of Mililani, Hawai'i, Yoro earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Hawai'i in 2008.
Yoro is married to the former Meredith Brynteson of Anacortes, Wash., and they are the parents of daughter Brynn.
