2011-12: As a redshirt freshman, Schmidt competed in three open tournaments, turning in a pair of sixth place finishes, while winning 11 matches on the season. He took sixth at the UCM Open, the first tournament of the year, earning five victories on the day. He pinned his first opponent with four seconds left in the first period, and after falling to the consolation bracket, rallied off four bonus point wins that included two more pins. He won four matches at the Lindenwood Open the next week and recorded his fastest fall of the season, pinning Will Evans (Truman State) in just 51 seconds. Schmidt placed sixth again at the Roger Denker Open in January, which featured a 14-0 major decision win over Ethan Swingle (Lindenwood). On the season, Schmidt scored four decisions, two majors, four falls and a technical fall.
2010-11: Redshirted.
High School: Wrestled as a member of the Centralia Panthers squad, finishing second in state all four seasons. As a freshman at 112 pounds, Schmidt finished 31-2. He would lose only four matches in each of his last three seasons, going 34-4 as a sophomore at 119, 40-4 as a junior at 130 and 46-4 as a senior, also at 130, to finish his career with a 151-14 overall record. During his senior campaign, he helped lead the Panthers to a third place team finish at state. Along with his four wrestling letters, Schmidt also lettered four times in football and picked up four letters as a member of the FFA. He graduated as a member of the National Honor Society, finishing with a 3.98 grade point average, the eighth-best in his graduating class.
Personal: Mike Schmidt was born in St. Charles, Mo., to Bryan and Rosel Schmidt on Aug. 2, 1991. He has an older brother, Matt (20), and two younger twin brothers, Marc and Mitch (16). Schmidt is planning on majoring in Agribusiness.
