Biography

REDSHIRT SENIOR (2015-16)
  • In final season at Mizzou, went 8-8 while wrestling in three different weight classes, including ending the year at heavyweight in the MAC Championships.
  • Was awarded the “Strength and Conditioning” Award at end-of-the-year banquet for his devotion to the weight room.
  • Went 2-3 in dual competition, scoring 11 dual points with a fall and a technical fall.
  • Defeated Andrew Dixon (Oklahoma) by 16-0 technical fall (Jan. 30), filling in at 184 pounds.
  • Scored a fall (3:51) over Quinton Rosser (Northern Illinois) to help Mizzou clinch MAC regular season title (Feb. 7).
  • Took sixth-place at MAC Championships (March 6) at heavyweight, despite never weighing over 210 pounds. Scored a 16-0 technical fall over Jesse Webb (Ohio) in the first round.
  • Finished Mizzou career with 64-35 record and 24 career falls.

REDSHIRT JUNIOR (2014-15)

  • Posted a 15-11 overall record, including a career high 11 dual starts (5-6 record).
  • His 11 dual starts this season marked a new career high.
  • His season win total marked the third straight year with double digit victories.
  • Made nine consecutive starts at 165 pounds for Mizzou early-on, netting four dual wins in that span.
  • Tallied one MAC dual triumph, defeating Wally Maziarz (Buffalo) via fall (5:29) on Feb. 6, 2015.
  • Kicked off his 2014-15 campaign with a 3rd place finish at 2014 Harold Nichols Cyclone Open.
  • Went 6-1 at Cyclone Open with four of those wins resulting in bonus points.
  • Of his 10 bonus points wins this season, six resulted in pins over his opponents. His fastest came in 2:29 on Nov. 8, 2014 vs. Vince Dietz (St. Cloud State).
     
REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE (2013-14)
  • Competed in three tournaments for the Tigers and made his way onto the starting lineup at 184 pounds.
  • Johnston took third place at the Warren Williams/Daktronics Open, his only loss coming against teammate Mikey England, 3-1.
  • Won six of his eight matches at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open for a fourth place finish.
  • Was able to have his first dual start for Missouri against Caleb Busson of Northern Illinois. Johnston won the bout by major decision, 13-3.
  • Represented Missouri at the 2014 MAC Championships after Johnny Eblen suffered a season ending injury. Johnston placed fifth overall, narrowly missing an automatic bid to Nationals, however, his major decision and technical fall wins helped the Tigers with the edge they needed to claim the conference title.
  • With a season record of 20-10, Johnston picked up four wins by technical falls, seven by pin, and two by major decision.
     
REDSHIRT FRESHMAN (2012-13)
  • Johnston competed in six tournaments throughout the season, finishing with a season record of 19-6.
  • Took the titles as the Kaufman-Brand, Roger Denker, and Grand View Opens.
  • At the Kaufman-Brand Open, defeated Mizzou's Jordan Gagliano in the finals, 3-1 in sudden victory.
  • Johnston's first two wins at the Roger Denker Open were pins (1:21 and 6:00 respectively) followed by two decision wins.
  • In the finals match at the Grand View Open, Johnston faced Micah Barnes (Nebraska) and won by decision, 4-3.
  • Of his 19 wins, nine were pins, the fastest of which occurred at 1:06.
  • Was honored with the Marshall Esteppe Most Outstanding Freshman program award.
     
FRESHMAN (2011-12)
  • Taking his redshirt, Johnston competed at 174 pounds in five tournaments, placing in four of the five.
  • His first collegiate win came against Landon Ketsweter (PCC) at the UCM Open by decision, 11-4. Johnston ended up in fourth place overall at the tournament.
  • Finished in fourth at the Kaufman-Brand Open as well; his two losses came by fellow Tiger grapplers Dorian Henderson and Todd Porter.
  • Johnston took the titles at both the Roger Denker and MVC Opens with seven straight wins between the two tournaments.
  • Overall on the season, Johnston had a record of 21-6 with 10 of those wins coming by technical fall or pin.
     
WARRENSBURG HIGH SCHOOL (WARRENSBURG, MO)
  • Helped his team to four top-10 state finishes over the course of his career.
  • As a junior, took third place at state at 171 pounds, with a season record of 48-2. He also finished sixth at the national level.
  • In his senior season, went 52-2 in the 189-pound division, finishing second at state and fourth nationally.
  • Of his 167 wins throughout his four years of high school, 122 of those came by pins.
  • The four-time All-American is also a three-time Freestyle State Champion and a four-time Greco State Champion.
  • In 2011, he took second at the FILA Junior Nationals in Greco.

  • Cody was born on June 29, 1992 in Kansas City, Mo., to Scott and Sheila Johnston.
  • Has one sister, Kirshten.
  • Chose Mizzou over Virginia Tech, Columbia, and Penn.
