Catching Up With Jess

Nickname(s)

 Jess, A.J., Juicy J

What sport would you choose if not playing golf, and why?

Definitely basketball.  I played basketball my entire life and would love to get back on the court.  I played from age 6-13.

 First memory of golf?

Picking up my dad's heavy wedge and hitting it for the first time, which transformed me into loving it.

When did you get hooked on golf?

When I was six years old.

Are you excited for the new rules of golf coming in 2019?  Why/why not?

Yes! Especially dropping from knee height instead of should height.  Easier to have a better lie that way.

Favorite club in the bag right now

 3-wood

Favorite type of shot to play

 Flop shot.

Hardest shot for you to play

 30-50 yard bunker shot.

What driver & putter are in your bag?

Driver: Callaway Big Bertha; Putter Scotty Cameron Newport 2.

 Favorite golf moment

Making it to nationals last year.

 Any hole in ones?

 Yes!  I have one!

How do you cope with a bad shot?

Basically, I just get over it and find a way to make more birdies in the upcoming holes.

What advice would you give to junior golfers?

Take advantage of summer golf tournaments because those tournaments will help you find a college of your dreams.  But most importantly, have fun because golf should be fun.

 What’s your pre-shot routine?

Take two practice swings, step back from it, look at the hole, take a deep breath, and then approach the ball.

 Coolest course you’ve played?

 Torrey Pines.

 Toughest course you’ve played?

 Maridoe golf club.

 Prefer a Par 3, Par 4 or Par 5?

 Par 5.

Do you like to talk to playing partners or do you keep to yourself?

Mostly keep to myself and usually only talk to people if they initiate the conversation.

What do you want to do post-golf, career-wise?

 Play on the LPGA Tour.

What part of the game do you feel most comfortable with?

 Driving.

 How frustrating is this game?

VERY, but I like the challenge and it makes me work harder to be at the top.

Do you remember the good shots or the bad shots more?

 Bad shots.

What part of your game do you want to improve the most?

 Putting.

 Your dream foursome

Jordan Spieth, Michelle Wie, Justin Thomas, and me.

What lessons can you apply from golf to real life?

Learning to be patient and creating relationships that will last a lifetime.  Knowing how to lead a team and be a team player at the same time, that will help me be successful in any career I decide to go into.  I've learned that you do not have to have the perfect swing to make it work.  As long as you have the right mindset, then you will make it work.

What about golf drives you crazy?

When you make a putt and it looks soooooo good, but it either lips out or makes a 180 or 360 around the cup.  Every putt I think is going in never goes in!

What about golf keeps you coming back?

The challenge, but also wanting to perfect everything even though that is not possible.  I just love the feeling of hitting a good shot that will allow you to score.  Being very under par is what I love the most!
