Two-year anniversary of Veatch’s first day at Mizzou comes with three-year extension.
COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Missouri Board of Curators approved a three-year contract extension for Mizzou Director of Athletics Laird Veatch during its recent board meeting at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, reinforcing the university's commitment to Veatch's leadership and long-term vision for Mizzou Athletics.
Since beginning his tenure May 1, 2024, Veatch has led the department through a two-year period of significant transformation, highlighted by record-setting revenue growth, a sharp reduction in the department's negative operating balance and meaningful investment in facilities and fan experience across multiple sports.
"The momentum of Mizzou Athletics is undeniable thanks to the incredible leadership of Athletic Director Veatch," said University of Missouri President Mun Choi. "We are a powerhouse in the SEC and a source of pride for all Missourians. AD Veatch and his staff's commitment to excellence and winning championships will continue to drive our programs forward and deliver proven results for our student-athletes and dedicated Tiger fans."
"I'm incredibly grateful to President Choi and the Board of Curators for their trust and support," Veatch said. "This extension reflects the collective work of our coaches, staff, student-athletes and supporters who have embraced our 'Will to Win' and who believe in what Mizzou Athletics will become. We've made meaningful progress, but the reality is we're just getting started. Our focus remains on providing our programs the resources to consistently compete for and win championships to unite and elevate Mizzou for years to come."
Under Veatch's direction, Mizzou Athletics has executed a series of strategic initiatives, highlighted by continued progress on the Memorial Stadium Centennial Project, including key construction milestones and premium seating sales; a comprehensive restructure and rebrand of the Mizzou Athletics Fund to better align donor impact with program priorities; the launch of the Mizzou Leadership Circle to deepen high-level donor engagement; and an overhaul of football pricing that reflects surging demand and program momentum while generating new revenue to reinvest directly into winning.
The department has also introduced new premium seating for men's and women's basketball, relocated the nationally ranked gymnastics program to Mizzou Arena to enhance the fan and student-athlete experience, overhauled football parking operations and advanced facility upgrades across multiple sports — including a new soccer playing surface and a new outdoor track at Audrey J. Walton Stadium and a new playing surface at Taylor Stadium.
"The impactful vision and progress made through revenue growth, donor engagement and enhanced fan experiences by Athletic Director Veatch and his staff are truly exceptional," said Todd Graves, chair of the University of Missouri Board of Curators. "He is shaping a new, thriving future for Mizzou Athletics, and we are excited to see all that he continues to accomplish."
Mizzou has sustained competitive success over the past two years, including appearances in two football bowl games, two NCAA Men's Basketball Tournaments and 20 NCAA team championship events, while celebrating four individual NCAA champions and 38 All-Americans.
In the most recent fiscal year, Mizzou Athletics increased total revenue by $14 million to a record $182 million while reducing its negative operational balance by 40 percent.
"Athletic Director Veatch understands Mizzou's championship expectations and actively pursues initiatives that improve our athletic programs," said Curator Bob Blitz, chair of the board's Mizzou Intercollegiate Athletics Special Committee. "The historic Memorial Stadium Centennial Project is one example among many that proves he is leading Mizzou into a new era of success."
