COLUMBIA, Mo. - Tennis fell short to No. 11 South Carolina 4-2 in a hard-fought loss on Friday, March 6.
The Tigers played two competitive doubles matches but could not secure the doubles point. Sophomore Korina Rosa and senior Andrea Artimedi dropped their set 6-3. Sophomore Zoe Lazar and freshman Lara Quaglia's set then went unfinished when the score was tied 4-4. South Carolina won the third match by default.
Moving on to singles, Missouri battled through a series of competitive singles matches against South Carolina, highlighted by two wins for the Tigers. Sophomore Gian Octa delivered the first point for Missouri, defeating Helena Buchwald in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Octa controlled both sets with steady baseline play, jumping out to early advantages and maintaining the lead throughout to give Mizzou an early boost in the singles lineup.
South Carolina responded in No. 4 singles, where Jane Dunyon earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Quaglia. Dunyon held off a tight opening set before closing the match in the second to level the completed matches, fending off late rallies and using consistent groundstrokes to seal the point for the Gamecocks.
Artimedi added a second singles victory for Missouri with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Taylor Goetz in a tightly contested match. Both sets stretched deep as the Tiger sophomore held her composure in the closing games of each set to secure the straight-set victory.
At the fifth singles position, Lazar held a narrow 5-4 lead in the opening set against Jana Stojanova before the match went unfinished.
