Soccer Earns First SEC Point in 1-1 Draw at Arkansas

Box Score

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mizzou soccer earned its first point of Southeastern Conference play this season Friday night, drawing 1-1 with Arkansas at Razorback Field.

The Tigers (3-7-2, 0-4-1 SEC) were on the attack for much of the night, finishing with 15 shots and six on goal against Arkansas (4-4-3, 2-1-2 SEC). The Black & Gold found the equalizer after senior Taryn Chance (Stafford, Va.) recovered a rebound and finished from just outside the box in the 72nd minute.

“This is a resilient group, and I'm glad they finally got rewarded,” head coach Stefanie Golan said. “We created enough to win the game, and when we went down, the response was immediate. Taryn and Riley both made big plays to get us the point, and now it's on us to build on it against a great Vanderbilt team.”

Mizzou came out on the front foot and looked to have the breakthrough in the 21st minute, when senior Brianna Buels (Indianapolis, Ind.) headed home an Adams delivery, only for the goal to be waved off for offside. Senior Mia Yang (Leawood, Kan.) drew a save from the Arkansas goalkeeper, and a Razorbacks shot off the post kept the match scoreless at the break.

Freshman Lana Adams (Perryville, Mo.) led all players with five shots as Mizzou pushed for an opener it nearly found before halftime.

Arkansas broke through in the 65th minute to take a 1-0 lead, but the Tigers answered seven minutes later.

Sophomore Aly Bryant (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) had a shot blocked in the box, and Chance pounced on the loose ball to make her first shot of the season count and level the match.

The Razorbacks pressed for a winner down the stretch, earning a flurry of second-half corners, but senior Riley Wilkerson (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) stood tall with four saves to preserve the point, staying in goal after taking a cleat to the face in the first half. Arkansas appeared to grab a late winner with five seconds remaining, but the goal was overturned for goalkeeper interference, and the match finished level.
