Tennis Splits Doubleheader Action Against Northern Illinois and Chicago State

Mizzou tennis closed out its opening weekend of competition, splitting matches against Northern Illinois and Chicago State on Saturday, Jan. 17. The Tigers dropped the morning contest to NIU, 4-3, but topped CSU, 4-0, in the afternoon.
Match One: Northern Illinois
Missouri began the first of two matches against Northern Illinois. Graduate student Mary Brumfield and senior Andrea Artimedi were first to finish doubles, dominating their match 6-2. The Tigers were unable to secure a second doubles win as the Huskies secured the doubles point.
Three Tigers saw wins during singles competition. Sophomores Korina Roso and Gian Octa defeated their opponents in straight sets. Additionally, freshman Alex Ackman earned her first dual match singles win with a straight set victory. Despite some success in singles action, the Tigers were unable to clinch the match against NIU, losing 4-3.
Match Two: Chicago State
In the second match of the day, Mizzou grabbed the momentum early by securing the doubles point. Brumfield and Artimedi snagged a 6-1 win at No. 2, while Octa and freshman Lara Quaglia earned a 6-0 victory in the No. 3 spot.
Moving to singles, the Tigers quickly picked up three wins against the Cougars to seal the 4-0 win. Roso, Ackman and Octa picked up straight set wins. Additionally, Brumfield, Artimedi and Quaglia were all leading in their matches that ultimately went unfinished.
UP NEXT
Missouri returns to Columbia for its home opener against SEMO on Saturday, Jan. 31. Matches will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT.
