OREM, Utah – No. 19 Mizzou wrestling finished off a successful road trip with a resounding 31-9 win over Big 12 opponent Utah Valley on Saturday, Jan. 17.
Mizzou wrestlers won seven of ten matches, including an impressive five by bonus points. Missouri continues to improve, bumping its record to 8-6 (2-1 Big 12), while Utah Valley drops to 3-6 (1-3 Big 12).
The dual kicked off at 125 pounds with Mack Mauger for the Tigers. The Blackfoot, Idaho, native got to his offense early, securing a big win over his ranked Wolverine foe. 133 pounds featured an overtime bout, inevitably won with a takedown in sudden victory by sophomore Gage Walker. Utah Valley tied it up at six over the next two matches before redshirt senior Teague Travis cruised to a dominant technical fall, giving the Black and Gold a five-point cushion halfway through.
Mizzou came out of the gate flying in the second half of the dual. Redshirt junior J Conway led the way at 165 pounds, blitzing his way to a first-period fall. Bonus point machine and returning All-American Cam Steed turned in a technical fall, ending the bout just seconds before the second period buzzer. The No. 2-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, Aeoden Sinclair, made quick work of the Wolverines, also closing out a technical fall in period number two. Redshirt senior Evan Bates kept it hot, tallying a major decision at 197 pounds for Missouri's fifth consecutive bonus point victory. Mizzou's onslaught of bonus points widened the gap to a final score of 31-9 after the heavyweight match.
