LSU tallied the game's first 10 points and never trailed as the Mizzou men's basketball team fell on the road Saturday afternoon, 78-70. MU is now 13-5 on the year and 3-2 in SEC play, while LSU improves to 13-5 and 1-4 versus league foes.
MIZZOU LEADERS
Graduate student Jayden Stone led Mizzou for the second-straight game, scoring at least 20 points for the third time in four contests. Stone finished with 20 overall, adding four rebounds.
Four Tigers scored in double figures on the day – Mark Mitchell tallied 13 points and five rebounds, T.O. Barrett added 11 points and four assists, while Shawn Phillips Jr. scored 10 points.
GAME RECAP
LSU took advantage of the offensive glass early, while holding MU off the scoreboard. Mizzou missed its first seven field goals and didn't score for more than five minutes of game action, while LSU tallied seven of its 10 points during that stretch via second-chance points.
The Tigers were unable to dig out of their early hole as LSU headed into the locker room with a 37-27 advantage.
The hosts stretched their lead to as many as 14 points early in the second half but a 16-5 run put Mizzou right back in the thick of things. Trailing 45-31, Trent Pierce and Stone ignited the run as the Tigers pulled within three points, 50-47, with nearly 12 minutes remaining.
LSU, however, would have an answer every time. All three times Mizzou cut its deficit to a single possession, LSU scored on its next chance to never allow MU an opportunity to tie or take the lead. Mizzou made one final push to get within four with under a minute remaining but two more second-chance points sealed the victory for the hosts, 78-70.
GAME STATS
Mizzou outshot LSU on the day, making 43.5 percent of its field goals to 42.4 percent for LSU. The hosts, however, had the advantage in 3-pointers – making 10 triples to seven for MU – and on the glass – outrebounding Mizzou, 35-30, and finishing with 21 second-chance points.
