BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Mizzou soccer opened its 2026 season with a tie, playing Western Kentucky to a scoreless draw on Thursday evening at WKU Soccer Complex.
The Tigers (0-0-1) routinely kept pressure on the offensive half, leading the Hilltoppers (0-0-1) in shots on target, 6-3. With the result, Missouri moves to 18-8-5 in season openers and 4-5-3 when starting its year on the road.
“We schedule intentionally, and opening the season on the road was meant to challenge us,” head coach Stefanie Golan said. “Some players stepped into different roles tonight, and I thought there were some really positive things that came from that. We have to value the ball at a higher level and be more clinical with the chances we create, but I was proud of how hard our team battled against a very good Western Kentucky team that won its conference last year. There’s a lot we can learn from tonight, and we’ll take those lessons forward as we continue to grow throughout the season.”
Mizzou opened the match and quickly took a pair of on-target attempts, with freshman Audrey Gilbert (Plano, Texas) recording her first collegiate shot, and was quickly followed up by junior Emily Derucki (Wildwood, Mo.) in the fourth minute.
The Tigers continued to attack, recording three attempts in the final nine minutes of the opening half, two of which were blocked by Hilltopper defenders from point-blank range. McKenna Moran’s (Rowlett, Texas) strike marked the third save for the WKU keeper, helping MU to outshoot its opponent in the first half, 7-2.
The first of three saves for goalkeeper Kate Phillips’ (Fishers, Ind.) didn’t come until the 54th minute. The senior’s seventh shutout marked the 12th by a Tiger in a season opener.
Freshman Rylie Morse (Lebanon, Ohio) led the team in shots on goal with a pair of attempts in the second half, coming in the 55th and 68th minute, respectively. Morgan Meador (Ballwin, Mo.) played all 90 minutes of the contest for the 28th-consecutive match.
