Mizzou Soccer Caps Road Trip with 2-0 Win over Missouri State

The Tigers win their fifth-straight against Missouri State.

Mizzou soccer used a pair of late goals to power the Tigers to a 2-0 win at Missouri State on Sunday afternoon at Betty & Bobby Allison Stadium in Springfield, Missouri.

Neither Missouri (2-2-1) nor the Bears (2-3-1) was able to find the back of the net in the first 80 minutes until Olivia Chianelli (Arlington Heights, Ill.) recovered the ball at the 18-yard box and put in her first goal of the season. Just under three minutes later, Ava Vetter (Clayton, Mo.) scored for the second time this season off a right-footed shot, assisted by McKenna Moran (Rowlett, Texas).

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Kate Phillips (Fishers, Ind.) posted her second clean sheet of the season and fourth of her career, making a pair of saves on seven shots.

"Definitely pleased that we ended with two goals and a shutout," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "I didn't think it was as pretty a game as we obviously would have liked it to be, but that's what you need on Sundays a lot of the time. Sundays, for everybody, you're coming off a game that you've played earlier in the week, and it's tough to fight through, but that's what great teams can do, and I'm really proud of our women for doing just that."

The Tigers' offense wasted no time getting to work, recording three on-target shots in the first 11 minutes by Bella Carrillo (Frisco, Texas), Jessica Larson (O'Fallon, Mo.) and Emily Derucki (Wildwood, Mo.), all of which were saved by the Bears' goalkeeper.

Carillo took the game's first on-goal attempt after Derucki skated past her defender and got the ball to the senior, who fired a shot from the left side of the goal box off her right foot in the seventh minute. Larson followed less than two minutes later, where her corner kick was nearly directed into a goal but was pushed out of traffic by Missouri State's goalie and defenders. The early barrage was capped off by Derucki, who got free and shot from about 18 yards out but was stopped in the bottom left corner.

The final scoring opportunity of the half for the Black & Gold was by Hailey Chambliss (Eureka, Mo.) in the 30th minute, getting a shot off just outside the penalty box before being saved. In total, Missouri outshot Missouri State by a 7-3 margin in the first half, including 4-1 in on-target attempts.

The Tigers had just one scoring opportunity before scoring their two goals, when Keegan Good's (Parkville, Mo.) corner kick was snagged by the Missouri State goalie in the 58th minute.

Three of Mizzou's 10 shots on goal came in the final three minutes and 15 seconds after going up 2-0. Carillo recorded a second attempt, putting the ball in the top center of the net in the 87th minute, while Landis Canada (Fenton, Mich.) put two on target in the 89th and 90th minute – one in the top right of the net and the other in the bottom center.

Missouri ended with 16 shots, 10 of which on goal, and six corner kicks compared to Missouri State's 7 attempts, two on target and two corners.
