
Women's Basketball Signs Jayla Smith

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri women's basketball has signed graduate transfer guard Jayla Smith from Purdue, head coach Kellie Harper announced on Friday.
Smith played in two games a season ago before suffering an injury. In the contests, she tallied 5.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 15.7 minutes per game.
Appearing in 30 games with three starts as a sophomore, Smith averaged 7.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 2022-23. An efficient scorer, Smith shot 45.5 percent from the floor.
She finished second on the team with 17 blocks and posted five-straight double-figure scoring performances during Big 10 play.
For her career, she has totaled 503 career points while reaching double figures in 17 contests.
Elevating her play in meaningful moments, Smith has posted 9.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and shot 43% over six career postseason games.
Smith played under newly hired Missouri assistant coach Michael Scruggs at Purdue during the 2021-2022 season.
Ranked the No. 1 ranked player in the state of Indiana out of Lawrence North High School, Smith was named 2021 Indiana Miss Basketball.
A four-star prospect, she was also tabbed No. 42 nationally in the 2021 recruiting class by Prospect Nation.
An All-State selection, Smith led Lawrence to a 2020 IHSAA State Championship in addition to sectional and regional titles.
Smith joins Lisa Thompson, Sydney Mains, Shannon Dowell, Jordana Reisma and Saniah Tyler in the Tigers' offseason transfer class.
