Longhorns Power up to Take Series Opener from Baseball

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 7 Texas scored in each of the first five innings to build an insurmountable advantage en route to a 15-4 victory over University of Missouri baseball in seven innings Friday evening in the opening contest of the two clubs' Southeastern Conference series at Taylor Stadium.

Fueled by Will Gasparino's two-homer, eight-RBI performance, the Longhorns powered up to hit five round-trippers on the night, including solo shots from Jalin Flores and Kimble Schuessler in the first two innings to establish an early lead. A seven-run third would prove to be the difference, as the first seven UT batters reached base safely. Max Belyeu belted a two-run homer to spark the rally, and Gasparino registered his first two RBIs on a two-run single.

Tommy Farmer IV added an RBI-single, and Belyeu plated his third RBI of the inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk to extend the Longhorns lead to nine runs.

Mizzou (9-15, 0-6 SEC) struggled to find an offensive rhythm against UT left-hander Jared Spencer (3-1), who tossed three hitless innings to open the contest. Keegan Knutson beat out an infield chopper for the first Tigers safety of the game, and Tyler Macon followed with a sharp single to center to generate the first MU scoring threat of the night.

Spencer responded by inducing an inning-ending fly ball, before coaxing a rally-killing double-play grounder to shut down a Mizzou threat in the fifth.

After UT (21-3, 6-1 SEC) plated three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings on a pair of Gasparino three-run homers, the Tigers put together their first scoring rally of the weekend in the sixth. Isaiah Frost ignited the surge with a pinch-hit double, before Chris Patterson moved him to third on a fly ball to left, and Mateo Serna put Mizzou on the board with an RBI-grounder. Back-to-back walks kept the inning alive, and Brady Picarelli delivered a run-scoring single, followed by a Kaden Peer double that chased home two more runs to make it a 15-4 game.

Peer led the Tigers with a 2-for-3 night and two RBIs, and both Knutson and Macon reached base safely in two of their three trips to the plate.

On the mound, Cayden Nicoletto made his Mizzou pitching debut, working a perfect sixth inning that included a strikeout. Ben Smith and Jaylen Merchant contributed scoreless frames out of the Tigers bullpen as well.

TIGER NOTEBOOK

  • Peer collected his fourth multi-RBI game of the season and extended his hit streak to four games with his two-run double in the sixth.
  • Picarelli drove in a run on a pinch-hit single; Peer and Picarelli are tied for fourth on the team with 15 runs batted in apiece this season.
  • Serna registered his team-leading 26th RBI with his ground out in the sixth.
  • Jackson Lovich saw his streak of four consecutive multi-hit and multi-RBI performances come to an end with an 0-for-2 night.
  • Frost's pinch-hit double marked his first hit of the 2025 season in his first at-bat since Feb. 25.
  • Mizzou fell to 30-35 in its all-time series against Texas, the loss stopping a five-game win streak versus the Longhorns that dated back to 2012.
