COLUMBIA, Mo. – Four former University of Missouri baseball players are on Major League rosters for Opening Day while another 13 dot rosters in the minors.
Max Scherzer (Mets), Kyle Gibson (Phillies), Tanner Houck (Red Sox) and Pete Fairbanks (Rays) begin the season in the show. Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, who joined the New York Mets in the offseason, is scheduled to make his first start on Friday against the Washington Nationals. Scherzer spent seven six and a half seasons with Washington before being traded to the Dodgers last July.
Gibson is slated to get the start in game two of the Phillies' series against Oakland on Saturday. The right-hander will be in his first full season with the Phillies after joining the club via trade in 2021. He worked to a 3.71 ERA a season ago, the second-best mark of his nine-year professional career.
Houck will begin the season in the Red Sox rotation and is tabbed to make his first start on April 10 against the Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball. The youngest of the Tigers' major leaguers, Houck finished his inaugural season in Boston with a 3.52 ERA in 18 appearances including 13 starts.
Fairbanks' debut in 2022 will be delayed after the reliever suffered a lat injury in spring training. The former Tiger had established himself as one of the key high-leverage arms in the Rays bullpen with 47 appearances and a 3.59 ERA in 2021.
