Big hit eludes Tigers in series-opening loss

BATON ROUGE, La. – A three-run fifth inning propelled No. 22 LSU to a 5-3 win over Missouri baseball in the series opener Thursday night at Alex Box Stadium.

Luke Mann finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI triple to lead Mizzou (22-13, 5-11 SEC) offensively. Fox Leum added a 2-for-3 night with a double and hit-by-pitch while scoring a run.

Jacob Berry finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of solo home runs to lead LSU (25-12, 8-8 SEC) on the night. Tre' Morgan added a 3-for-4 performance and two RBI to the Bayou Bengals' effort. Ma'Khail Hilliard (4-0) spun seven strong innings for LSU on the mound, allowing just two runs while striking out five.

Spencer Miles (2-4) took the loss on the mound. The right-hander was charged with five runs, all earned on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Carter Rustad gave the Tigers an opportunity in relief, finishing the game with 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

IMPACT INNING

With the game tied 2-2, LSU plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead midway through the game. A one-out single from Dylan Crews sparked the frame as another single put runners at the corners. Cade Doughty plated one when his line drive just snuck by a leaping Luke Mann at third for a double. Tre' Morgan followed with a Baltimore chop over a drawn-in infield to score two more and make it 5-2 LSU.

FROM THE SKIP

Coach Bieser on the series opener…

"A well-played ballgame on both sides. It was a tough-fought game. The difference in this ballgame was a chopper out in front of the plate that bounces over the first baseman's head and they pick up two runs there... We just didn't have many breaks and we couldn't punch that big hit when we really needed it."

UP NEXT

Mizzou and LSU return to Alex Box Stadium for game two of the series on Friday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network +.
