PHOENIX – The University of Missouri baseball team had an answer for every Arizona State surge on Sunday night, picking up a 6-4 win over the Sun Devils at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Mizzou (11-2) struck first behind junior Torin Montgomery's first-inning RBI double. Arizona State (8-10) tied the game an inning later, but senior Josh Day responded with a solo home run on the first pitch of the third, putting the Tigers back in front. Another shot from freshman Carlos Peña made it 3-1 before the Sun Devils rallied again to draw even.
Peña finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a homer and double while scoring two runs. Sophomore Ross Lovich also produced a multi-hit day to finish off a 6-for-9 weekend in the desert.
On the mound, junior Austin Marozas was stellar in his second outing for the black and gold. The right-hander went four innings, surrendering just one run on two hits while striking out a pair. Sophomore Carter Rustad (2-0) picked up the win in relief, going four innings while allowing three runs. Sophomore Ian Lohse closed the door for his first save of the season.
IMPACT INNING
Leading 4-3 headed to the seventh inning, Mizzou scored a pair of pivotal insurance runs prior to the stretch. Senior Mike Coletta started the frame with a double to right field.
