
Mizzou Completes Second Double-Header Against FAU & North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Missouri (5-8) fell short in the team's second double-header in a one-week span. The Tigers lost to Florida Atlantic University (5-6), 3-4, and the University of North Florida (5-6), 1-4, on Sunday afternoon.
Mizzou's matchup against FAU began with singles competition. Bronte Murgett put the Tigers in the lead with her win over Martina Kudelova, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. FAU tied the score at one apiece before Elys Ventura secured another point via opponent retirement. Gabriela Martinez scored a third point for Mizzou against Amber McGinnis, 6-3, 6-2. The Owls tied it up, 3-3, and the teams moved to doubles play. FAU won the doubles point and took the match.
Under half an hour later, the Tigers were back on the courts playing their second opponent, North Florida. Ellie Wright and Romary Cardenas took down Summer Yardley and Kendall Nash, 6-4, leaving the doubles point to the final match. Elys Ventura and Emelie Schwarte battled back and forced a seventh set against Anslee Long and Isabel Oliveira. North Florida took the point and singles competition began. Valentina Vazquez beat Nash in singles play, 6-3, 6-1, before North Florida clinched the match.
"Today was tough; first outdoor matches of the year are always a challenge. Congrats to both FAU and North Florida on hard fought battles." said coach Chris Wootton. "We are looking forward to getting back to Columbia for a few days. We are proud to be Tigers and taking on the challenge of the SEC is next– thirteen opportunities to be great!"
The Tigers have the week to recover before taking on their first SEC opponent of the season. Mizzou will travel to the University of Arkansas on Saturday, Mar. 1, at 1 p.m.
