The honor is the first for the Columbia native
COLUMIBA, Mo. – Following a major upset in his last regular season match, University of Missouri wrestler Jeremiah Kent was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday morning. The honor is the first weekly award for the redshirt sophomore.
Kent defeated Iowa State's seventh-ranked Marcus Coleman in Missouri's 17-16 loss on Feb. 16. The win was his first ranked victory of the season and the highest ranked win of his career.
"It was a real big win for Jeremiah," head coach Brian Smith said. "It was his first big top-10 win and I'm excited to see this help his confidence going into the Big 12 Championships."
The Columbia native started the match with a flurry of points. Kent secured a quick body lock and put Coleman on his back for a six-point exchange. Kent rode his opponent out for the remainder of the first period.
Having built up a sizable lead, Kent utilized three escapes in the next two periods to hold off Coleman. The Iowa State 184-pounder grabbed five third-period points to lessen the deficit but was unable to secure a final takedown and ride out to take away Kent's riding time advantage.
Kent is the fourth Missouri grappler to be named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week this season, and third in as many weeks. The Tigers lead the conference with five weekly award recipients.
