Columbia, Mo.- The Missouri men's basketball team connected on its most 3-pointers in three years, earning a 92-85 victory over Penn in front of 8,483 fans at Mizzou Arena on Friday night. With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-0 early in the 2022-23 season, while the Quakers fall to 0-2.
On a night where Mizzou nailed 16 triples, senior Noah Carter led the charge in his second game in the Black & Gold – finishing with 28 points. The senior connected on 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and added a team-best eight rebounds to go with three assists and two steals.
Overall, four Tigers scored in double figures with graduate students D'Moi Hodge, Nick Honor and Tre Gomillion adding 17, 16 and 11 points, respectively. Gomillion (5) and Honor (4) also combined for nine assists to just two turnovers as Missouri tallied 20 assists in the second-straight contest.
The Tigers began with a fiery start, connecting on a 3-pointer on their first five possessions and six of their first seven overall. Carter rang in three of those five as Mizzou grabbed the early 12-0 lead. However, Penn made a run of its own and a 25-5 spell put the visitors in front by seven, 32-25.
Hodge, however, would help settle the Tigers and his 3-pointer with under 30 seconds left capped an 8-0 Mizzou run that led to a 43-43 game at the break.
Missouri came back out in the second half with momentum, never trailing during the final second 20 minutes of action. Penn would not allow the Tigers to fully pull away, however, and would square the game at 67 with over six minutes remaining. Gomillion would respond though for the Tigers, hitting a 3-pointer while being fouled to put the hosts in front for good.
Gomillion's shot ignited a stretch where Mizzou scored on its final 11 possessions of the game en route to the seven-point victory. Gomillion was quickly followed with triples from Honor, Carter and Hodge as the Tigers pulled in front by 12, 83-71, with 2:44 left before the final 92-85 tally.
Mizzou shot 45.9 percentage on the night, and 16-of-35 from 3-point range. The Tigers also forced Penn into 19 miscues, holding a 29-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
