COLUMBIA, Mo. – On Wednesday, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association narrowed the list of Freshman of the Year candidates from 30 to 15. Mizzou Softball Shortstop Jenna Laird was among the ten players listed. This season, both 2020 and 2021 freshmen are considered for the award, thus the Association added five players to their list to consider 30, instead of the traditional 25, and then again with 15 players instead of 10.
Earlier this week, Laird was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Starting all 51 games at shortstop, she is batting .406 in the season with 12 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 37 RBI. The freshman has added 11 stolen bases on 11 attempts.
The New York native has been named SEC Freshman of the Week four times during the 2021 season. She leads all freshmen in SEC play in batting average, hits, extra-base hits, on base percentage, slugging percentage, stolen bases, runs and total bases.
The Tigers will take on LSU in their SEC Tournament opener this afternoon with a scheduled start of 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will begin 35 minutes after the conclusion of the Mississippi State-Florida game.
