COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Track and Field freshman Skylar Ciccolini (Lewistown, Pa.) was named SEC Women's Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday. Competing at the War Eagle Invitational this past weekend, Ciccolini broke the school record in the women's javelin with a throw of 56.00m (183-9), which also ranks fifth nationally in the event.
Earning her first SEC weekly honor, Ciccolini surpassed teammate Sophia Rivera (Brentowood, Mo.) with her record-breaking performance. She also ranks second among SEC competition. Ciccolini also surpassed the U.S. Olympic trial standard of 54.00m with the throw.
Earlier this season, Ciccolini made her debut in the Black & Gold at the Texas Relays, where she finished fourth overall and second among collegiate competition in the javelin with a throw of 53.39m (175-2).
Ciccolini is the second Mizzou track & field athlete to earn SEC weekly honors on the year. Earlier in the outdoor season, redshirt freshman Mitch Weber (Saint Clair, Minn.) won the SEC Men's Newcomer of the Week honor for his performance in the discus throw at the Mizzou Spring Opener.
