Mizzou Soccer Victorious in Border War

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (6-5-3) closed out the spring schedule with a 1-0 victory over bitter-rival Kansas. The Tigers were able to gain the advantage in the second half on an own goal and they held on the rest of the way.
It was a tense and back-and-forth affair. The Jayhawks outshot the Tigers 13-12 in the match, with five on goal to Mizzou's three.
The first half of the match was marked by the Tigers shooting from distance and the Jayhawks attempting to build an attack on a counter.
Kansas' best opportunity to get on the board was in the 36th minute. A Jayhawk forward was able to get some space inside of the 18, but her shot was just tipped away by Bella Alessio.
The first half ended in a scoreless draw. While the Jayhawks led 9-6 in total shots at the half, the tide would turn, and Mizzou would get the majority of the chances from that point on.
The Tigers came out in the second half and put the pressure on the Jayhawk defense. In the 50th minute, Macy Trujillo nearly put Mizzou in front with a shot that struck the crossbar.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou was finally able to break through on an own goal off a Julissa Cisneros free kick. Cisneros was playing the ball into the box from the wing, while both the Kansas keeper and a defender attempted to gain possession or clear the ball from there. The ball deflected off both of the Kansas players and into the net.
The Tigers held on for the rest of the 90 minutes and Mizzou defeated Kansas for the first time since 2014.
TOP TIGERS
Bella Alessio earned her second shut out of the spring season. The keeper had five saves in the contest while earning the victory.
Julissa Cisneros played the ball into the box and consistently put pressure on the Kansas defense.
Cassidy Nurnberger played all 90 minutes of the contest, playing a crucial role in the midfield, where most of the possession in the match was in the center half of the field.
NOTES
Mizzou finishes the regular season with w 6-5-3 record. The Tigers have a winning record for the first time since 2016.
Bryan Blitz earned his 299th-career victory in the contest.
Mizzou Soccer is now 12-10-1 all-time against Kanas.
