Mizzou Stumbles in Late Innings at Kansas

Eight-run seventh upends Tigers

LAWRENCE, Kan. – An eight-run bottom of the seventh spoiled the day as Mizzou Baseball (8-16) fell 10-9 at Kansas (15-8) on Tuesday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Senior Mark Vierling opened the scoring with a two-run single into center field in the top of the third inning. Mizzou poured it on in the fourth when sophomore Luke Mann launched a towering solo shot over the scoreboard in right center to make it 3-0. Sophomore Dalton McNamara recorded his first collegiate RBI on a single to right to make it a four-run lead before a wild pitch allowed another Tiger to score and make it 5-0.

The Tigers scored two more in the fifth with savvy baserunning and added another pair in the seventh on knocks from Mann and Cameron Swanger to build a 9-2 advantage.

The game flipped in the seventh when Kansas scored eight times, six coming with two outs, to take a 10-9 lead. The Tigers would get the tying run to second base in the final frame but a double play gave the Jayhawks the win.

HEAR FROM THE SKIPPER

Head coach Steve Bieser on the late inning loss…

"Just a really tough afternoon… When you think you've got a ballgame in hand and you feel like things are rolling your way, all the sudden you give up eight runs in one inning. It's just unacceptable and we just have to continue to work. Nobody is going to feel sorry for us."
