George now holds three program records
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou Track & Field completed the second day of action at the Texas Relays and Raleigh Relays on Friday night, as redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, U.K.) broke the school record in the men's 10,000m race and senior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) cracked the program top-10 in the women's 5000m.
Notable Finishes
On the final event of the night at the Raleigh Relays, George broke the Mizzou school record in the men's 10,000m. George finished in a time of 29:00.16, shattering the previous school best by more than 15 seconds. George also holds the school records in the indoor 3000m and 5000m.
In her outdoor 5000m debut, Chapman ran a 15:54.29 to place ninth in the event in a field of nearly 90 athletes. Chapman's mark also cracked the Mizzou record books, as she holds the fourth-fastest time in program history.
Down in Texas, redshirt freshman Mitch Weber (Saint Clair, Minn.) placed third overall and second among NCAA competitors in the men's discus with a throw of 57.61m (189-0). Weber still holds the second best discus mark in that nation at 60.99m (200-1).
Quotables
Coach Marc Burns on Thomas and Sarah's performances...
"Thomas ran a brilliant race tonight. He was patient early and covered each move his group made over the last half of the race. He closed in 61 seconds so we feel like there is a lot more there for future 10k's! This is his third school record at Mizzou!"
"This was Sarah's first 5k on the track and it was a good one. She ran like a veteran and stayed in good position throughout the race. Her strong finish put her under 16 minutes. A super start to the outdoor season."
Up Next
The Tigers wrap up competition at the Texas and Raleigh Relays tomorrow, beginning with the women's discus at 10:45 a.m. After the meet, Mizzou will have the week off before preparing for the Tom Botts Invitational, the final home meet of the season, on April 9-10.
